Just published research from Gallup concludes that the primary driver of employee engagement is how organisations develop their employees. Covering more than 82,000 teams in 230 organization across 49 industries and in 73 different countries, the Gallup research found that engagement levels have generally increased, and this has been achieved by organisations that strive to achieve high-development cultures.

Gallup has identified four themes:

1. High-development cultures are CEO – and – board initiated

Strategic leadership led talent reviews, talent agenda processes, and full employee involvement in strategy development are just three of the ways we at Scala have helped organisations initiate and lead high-development agendas from the top.

2. Managers are coaches and not bosses

At Scala, we have online courses that can be self-managed, or supported through internal coaching to transform your managers into coaches.

3. High-development cultures practice companywide communication

This includes a designated “champions network” that communicates, and collects best practices and answers questions so that it is clear what highly engaged teams ‘look like.’

4. Managers are held accountable

Recognition of outstanding team leaders, understanding the difference between good and great and low tolerance of mediocrity, high-value career paths for individual contributor roles, and clear expectations are just some of the themes that are important here.
